Crimson & Clover

Imagine a young Patty Smith, an alive Kurt Cobain & Joan Jett all in a three way. Now imagine that they had a baby, and that the baby was a vintage boutique in Sacramento.  Meet Crimson & Clover, an eclectic shop set in an old Victorian on 16th street, smack-dab across from Fremont Park and rubbing elbows with Hot Italian.

Crimson & Clover was born November 1st, 2009 from the ashes of Atelier, the quirky, nearly legendary space that specialized in re-made & hand-made fashions. Two of the artists involved in the cooperative, Kara Perez & Nicole Honeyeater, took the space over when Atelier's doors  finally closed for good.

Nicole and Kara's aim was "to create a space that was sweet & romantic, with a hint of rock-n-roll." And I dare say that they've done just that.  Crimson & Clover is saturated with atmosphere: part whimsy, part poetry and a whole lot of street-cred edge. The rooms are jam-packed, not a corner wasted, piled high & overflowing with rescued vintage, clothing & collectibles, as well as one-of-a-kind hand-crafted items. The jewelry collection alone could keep you busy in the shop for hours.

The ladies both design their own line of clothing and jewelry.  Kara is the artist behind the cute & dreamy Porkchop Rules, while Nicole creates for her cult-label Flaming Hag Folkwear. In addition to operating their Midtown shop, Kara and Nicole also sell on Etsy. You can check out their respective shops, here & here.

Crimson & Clover carries clothing and accessories for women, men, and children, as well as vintage housewares. The store hours are:  Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 11-7, Friday 12-8, and Saturday 11-7.  They are also available by appointment during off-hours for special shopping trips.

"We wanted to make a shop that was a warm and inviting place to be," Nicole told the Citizen Rosebud in a recent e-mail, "an eclectic little safe haven, full of fashion inspiration." Which is an apt description of any visit to Crimson & Clover. With a hand-full of hellos, two bright smiles, and a Victorian flat stuffed full of wonderful creations, I believe they have done just that.

Crimson & Clover will be one of the featured sellers at this Saturday's Bespoked/ Be Quiet Vintage Fashion Bazaar which will take place at 1819 Hub on 23rd Street. Kara will be working the event, so come by and say hi.
