Raindrops and Polka Dots: Feeling Right as Rain in Adorable Dotted Rainboots |
Like All the Girls in Boston. When I wore these adorable polka dotted rainboots out and about on Greenwood Ave the other day, I received quite an unusual amount of comments from passerbys. Among the handful of "cute boots," and "nice boots" and "hey polka dots!" came my favorite comment- slung at me by a tall, gaunt cowboy looking gentleman in his early to mid fifties.
Said gent was outside a bar, smoking a cigarette and somehow had managed in between his puffs to nod at me and say: "Hey, nice boots! You know all the girls in Boston are wearing those boots."
I stopped in my polka dotted tracks. I turned to face him.
"Oh yeah?" I say.
Cowboy: Exhale. Nod.
"Yeah," he replied. "All the girls in Boston. Especially the young ones. They go about wearing boots just like that." I nod.
"They look nice, he says. "You look nice," Boston cowboy hat takes another puff of his cigarette. His face lit up at the memory of all those girls. Wearing all those boots. He smiled, giving me a good look up and down. "Yeah, you look like all the girls in Boston wearing those boots."
Here's where it would have been smart to answer back in my best Goodwill-Hunting accent, to say in my best Ben Affleck/Matt Damon voice a Beantown "Thank you." Only I'm shitty at accents, so I just said it in my signature high pitched Nor-Cal utterance: "Hey yeah, that's cool. Hey thanks!"
A perky nod, an about face, and a march onto my destination. In my polka dot rainboots.
Just like all the girls in Boston.
Now Wearing:
Polka Dot Rainboots, similar HERE
I woulda said something dumb like "Paark the caar in the Haaarvarrd caar paark" or "How do you like dem apples?" which is the only line I remember from that movie.
ReplyDeleteI always like the unexpected comments best. They catch you off guard, but you always know they're genuine.
Cute boots ;)
Another edition of Men Smoking Outside Bars Saying Strange Shit To Women They Don't Know. But at least your guy was nice. And they ARE cute boots.
ReplyDeleteHey, I think that was my dad. Next time could you remind him to call home?
ReplyDeleteterrific story!
ReplyDeleteThis story made me giggle a little. I think it's funny when dudes like to (legitimately) comment on fashion. I have a purse made of can tops that I get a million comments on-- even from guys!! It's so funny when they're like, "Is that made of can tabs??? I've never seen anything like that! That is so cool!!" And they mean it --and they're talking about my purse :)
ReplyDeleteHaha! Nice tale! And cute boots too!
ReplyDeleteGirl, you're styling! Love the boots and the story that went along :)
ReplyDeleteI love this snapshot of a moment's interaction and exchange. It's a tiny, one-act play in a minute. I wish I'd been leaning against a shop door, observing...
ReplyDeleteAnd thank you SO very much for your last comment. Bella, you are truly wonderful and I'm so glad that blogging allows us all to make these beautiful connections across the world.
He was probably trying to think of a way to politely ask you where he can get a pair for himself.
ReplyDeleteThat had to have made your day : ) So nice to get unsolicited compliments from strangers.

Oh, to be a Boston girl again, with the shenanigans and such adorable boots as those. ;)

ReplyDeleteHaaah Haaah Haaah [said with an accent]
ReplyDeleteWho knew? An unexpected fashion maven.
And now, an ear worm for you:
Rain Dots keep falling on my head...
Bwahahahaha [evil accent]
Mr Cowboy is right - they ARE cute boots!
Super cute.....as always! Love the boots too! ;)
ReplyDeleteCheers, Heather
I'll bet you are much cooler in your polka dot boots than the bean town chicks. Somehow I picture those Boston girls with preppy accoutrements, like kelly green shetland sweaters, light blue button down shirts, maybe a hint of madras plaid somewhere. I know, I grew up not far from there. I think your cowboy was homesick and nostalgic for his youth. You just made his day!!! And mine :-) XXOO
ReplyDeleteSuper adorable boots, and I love the story you posted with them. :-)
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun story! I'm casting Sam Elliott in the role (drooool). And I love your boots! So many cute patterns now, and my wellies are olive green, utilitarian, and will never wear out. Or maybe they'll meet with a little accident and I can buy some new ones like yours!
ReplyDeleteThat is the best, best, best comment ever. Love it. And the boots, too!
ReplyDeleteThis is the best post I've read in a long long time. I don't know why, exactly, but it just feels...real. And in that, this is the sort of thing you know actually happened to someone way. You wrote it beautifully as well. :)
ReplyDeleteI must admit to having a giggle at this .
ReplyDeleteX x
I too would have said "nice boots". Two things I can never seem to find much of where I live- polka dot and houndstooth items of clothing. These are adorable!
ReplyDeleteThis made me giggle too, lovely story :D And cute boots! boston girls.. ;)
ReplyDeletethey're really cute boots, and love to read your anecdotes and little real stories, so genuine!
ReplyDeletebesos
Hilarious story. You can't make up anything better than that.
ReplyDeleteLooking at your boots, my heart aches. I wanna wear rainboots as cute as this! Everytime I see a girl in them (and not just in Boston), my heart yearns with strong desire. Since nobody would wear rainboots indoors, I have no excuse to buy them but their playfulness drives me wild.
Great story Bella! I'll bet he wanted to buy those polka dot boots a drink and talk about Boston some more. You are a charmer.

They aren't nice boota. They are freakin' AWESOME boots!!! I love them!! i've been searching for a pair in a bright print myself!
ReplyDeleteThat is histerical. I once got a compliment from a cowboy. It was actually the most curtious pick u I've ever gotten. He politely asked me if I was married and when I said yes, he replied " well that's a darn shame. If you don't mind me saying " your the most beautiful girl I've ever seen". I blushed and thanked him.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is how to write a style blog. Really. It's what I want to know about polka-dot boots and the time you wore them.
ReplyDeleteDear Rosebud, so glad I met you.
I love your polka dot rain boots! So cute! I have a friend who was from Boston but moved South. We call him Chowda Head down here..
ReplyDeleteHahaha, such a cute story! Loved your descriptions, I felt like I was there! And the boots are truly adorable :)
ReplyDeleteI've never been to Boston, but those are great boots!
ReplyDeleteHow funny, I could just imagine that accent, haha! Hey, polka dots! I do love the boots too! xo :)
ReplyDeleteFunny!! I wonder if he was really from Boston?
ReplyDeleteLove the boots and love the story Bella, if that happened here it would still be good, but not as good as a cowboy outside a bar saying it to you. Now I'm picturing some cool handsome Sam Shepard type. xx
ReplyDeleteThe boots and the story are fab. However, you are a show stopper in any outfit you compose and take out the door!
