Hi! My name is Meghan and I'm from the blog Cirque du Frock.
Bella asked me over to talk to some awesome second hand shoppers and style
icons on why they shop second hand, and I think that's just the best thing!
Second hand shopping has always been, to my mom's chagrin, a
huge part of my life. I love rooting through flea markets and thrift shops for
clothes and making them into my own treasures. I love the hunt! And I have to
say, I love standing out in a crowd.
It started when I was in my freshman year of high school – I
wanted to dress like all the cool punk kids, but I couldn't afford bondage
pants from Hot Topic or Dr Martens, so I would go to the local thrift shop and
I would buy vintage dresses and black army boots and leather jackets to patch,
paint and stud until I had my own unique look. It's been love ever since!
As I grew up, and I had grown-up bills like rent and
electricity, I started getting more and more frustrated with retailers for
charging so much for such shoddy craftsmanship, so I continued to sew, using
thrifted clothes and fabric as my raw materials. It is very satisfying to be
able to say that I've had a hand in making at least 90% of my wardrobe. It's
also the best thing in the world to me to spend a whole day sewing with my
headphones on and a cup of coffee waiting for me. Being a crafter, I also
appreciate the handmade things in life and I love vintage and indie designers
because they seem so fearless in their styling.
I am so so happy to be writing for Bella. Her blog has been a
huge inspiration to me- sometimes it's not the easiest thing in the world to
stand out, and you hear a lot of things from older people like, 'maybe it's
time to settle down' or 'we'd like you better if you didn't dress weird', and I
LOVE that the ladies I've met through Bella's blog would NEVER tell anyone
that. I'm constantly inspired by the content on this blog and now to be
contributing!
That's all for me, I think. I'm really bad at talking about
myself. Until next time!

Meghan! Here! How exciting!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ally - what a treat!
ReplyDeleteAlly and Patti, I am so thrilled that she is HERE!
ReplyDeleteGreat story! I love the uniqueness of second hand and I've also "tailored" pieces to my liking. When I was young, I wanted a punk rock vibe too and couldn't afford it. I raided my grandfather's wardrobe to get the look!
ReplyDeleteAhh, my lovely name twin! I adore her. Meghan doesn't know it, but we're parallel universe twins.
ReplyDeleteCongrats!! You are awesome!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat post!
ReplyDeleteThat's so fantastic! You did a great job introducing yourself and I found it both pleasant to read and interesting. You have a special talent for making and remaking clothes which I really admire. I hate sewing but I wish I didn't. I think in part that is because I have to alter the patterns and I'm not good at that. I bring home things from the thrift shop thinking I will make them over but then I don't.
ReplyDeleteOoh, I feel like a member of a special club - I knew about this! But how?? Hee hee!
ReplyDeleteyour second look is so cute :) and optimistic! i love it ! You have a very nice blog tell me how about follow each other?? Let me know if you atart and I will follow back :)
ReplyDeletehave a nice day sweety!
