Confession time: nobody asked me to start a blog. Not one soul. On November 30, 2008, I hit publish on my very first Citizen Rosebud post over on WordPress - a little poem about a gal who eats her vegetables, collects old records and wears vintage but looks to the future. I was in my forties. I had zero readers. I had no clue what I was doing. And honestly? Best way to start. So if you've been itching to begin a style blog of your own, pull up a chair, Rosebuds.
BLOOMING LATE + LOVING IT: me in 2010, not quite two years into this blogging business, wearing a thrifted floral frock and handmade blossoms from a blogger care package swap. Community, people!
SO YOU WANNA BLOG? GOOD.
Here's the honest truth: the internet is a LOT busier than it was in 2008. Folks have a thousand ways to spend a free evening online - binging a show, scrolling short videos, a few rounds at an online casino like incaspin, falling down a rabbit hole about 1940s pin curls (guilty). Your little blog doesn't need to out-shout all that. It just needs to be the coziest seat in the house. Think corner café, not billboard.
And that's good news for newbies. A personal blog was never about being the biggest voice in the room. It's about having a point of view and sharing it, warts and all. Trend reports? Those are a dime a dozen. But your closet, your thrift scores, your stories? Nobody else has those. That's your secret sauce, so pour it on.
THE ELEMENTS OF STYLE (BLOG EDITION)
Every writer worth her red pen knows that famous little book on writing style. Well, a style blog has its own short list of must-haves, and none of them is a fancy template. When I think about the elements of style blog readers keep coming back for, here's what makes the cut:
| Element | What it means | Rosebud tip |
|---|---|---|
| Voice | How your writing sounds | Write like you're talking to your best friend |
| Point of view | What you actually care about | Pick a lane: vintage, thrift, over-40, whatever's YOU |
| Photos | How your outfits look on screen | Natural light + a plain background |
| Rhythm | How often you post | A schedule you can really keep |
| Community | Who you talk with | Answer comments, visit other blogs |
Voice and point of view come first, every time. Photos get better. Schedules get sorted. But readers stick around for a person, not a layout. Back in 2011 I wrote that blogging is just the old-fashioned craft of storytelling with new tools, and I still believe it. The tools change every few years. The storytelling? Not so much.
To be a good blogger is to be a good writer, an engaged responder, and a GREAT storyteller.
HOW TO START A STYLE BLOG WITHOUT LOSING YOUR MIND
The nuts + bolts are easier than you think. The hard part is starting before you feel "ready" (spoiler: you'll never feel ready). Here's the Rosebud starter kit to get that first post out the door:
- Choose a name that feels like you, and will still fit in five years
- Grab a free platform and a clean, readable template
- Write an about page: who you are, what you love, why you're here
- Sketch out your first few posts before launch day
- Pick a posting schedule that fits your real life
- Hit publish, even if it's not perfect (it won't be, and that's fine)
When I started, I committed to posting three times a week, and I stuck to it for a good long while. It taught me discipline, sure. It also wore me out. So pick a pace that fits YOUR life. One good post a week beats three half-baked ones, every day of the week.
Keep a running list of post ideas, too. Outfit posts are the bread and butter of most style blogs, but variety keeps it fresh. Thrift hauls, care tips, a shout-out to your favorite local shop, the story behind a gifted sweater, a look back at an old outfit... it all counts. And if you take a break, even for YEARS? You can always come back. Ask me how I know.
CAMERA BAG BEFORE MAKE-UP BAG
Style blogging is a visual sport, so yes, photos matter. But you don't need a fancy-schmancy camera. You need decent light, a background that doesn't steal the show, and the patience to take about forty shots to get one keeper. A phone does the trick when the light is right.
| Location | Light quality | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Garden or backyard | Soft + natural | Prints and florals | Busy greenery |
| Brick or block wall | Even and simple | Bold outfits | Harsh midday shadows |
| Inside by a window | Gentle side light | Details and accessories | Tight spaces |
| Garage "studio" | Controlled | Product photos | Needs extra lamps |
| City sidewalk | All over the place | Street style | Nosy passersby |
I once rigged up a makeshift photo studio in my garage, and it took a good while to work out the kinks. Still, most of my favorite shots happened outside, against a garden or a plain old wall. Rope in a friend, or grab a little tripod and a timer. Shoot more than you think you need, and get close-ups of the good stuff - a brooch, a hem, a killer pair of shoes.
FIND YOUR PEOPLE (AND BE ONE)
Here's the part nobody tells you: a blog grows through relationships. Some of my very best blogging memories are about other bloggers. Local meet-ups. A floral care package swap with gals from all over the world. Blogroll pages stuffed with hidden gems instead of the same big-timers everyone already reads. Community takes work, but it's the whole point. The bloggers who answered my comments way back when? I still remember every one of them.
- Leave real comments on blogs you love (not just "cute!")
- Reply to the folks who comment on yours
- Share the little guys, not just the famous ones
- Join a blogging group or network
- Show up to local meet-ups when you can
- Team up on swaps, challenges or guest posts
Readers stick around for a person, not a layout.
So there you have it, Rosebuds. Starting a style blog doesn't take permission, a big budget or perfect photos. It takes a point of view, a little patience and the guts to hit publish. Take good care of your voice, your photos and your people, and your blog will bloom in its own sweet time, one post + one reader at a time. Now tell me: what story do YOU want your blog to tell? xo, Bella Q
